Happy Christmas to you all

A small crowd of Hobart dancers enjoyed a Christmas-themed milonga Tuesday night. The music playlist included:

  • Brindis para Navidad (Orquesta de Osmar Maderna con Adolfo Rivas)
  • El vals de la nochebuena (Orquesta de Alfredo De Angelis con Carlos Dante)
  • Navidad (Orquesta de Francisco Canaro)
  • Feliz Navidad (Orquesta de Juan D’Arienzo con Jorge Valdez)

The cortinas were from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. The duration of milonga was two hours as usual time slot for Tuesday allowed. It was a mini milonga and people still felt like dancing after “La cumparsita”. So, they danced to “Navidad” (Orquesta de Osvaldo Pugliese con Jorge Maciel), which was played earlier that night as pre-milonga BGM.

This Christmas milonga was the last club event for the year. In the New Year we will be starting with the regular First Friday moved to the “Second Friday” on the 8th of January 2021. For details, please, keep an eye on web and Facebook announcements, SMS and email messages.

Wish you all happy Christmas and a great healthy (COVID free!) New Year.

Thank you for attending

Last night ,we had our First Friday Milonga of December celebrating birthday of Carlos Gardel and Julio De Caro a week in advance. It was a pleasant night. Thank you everybody for attending. Special thanks to those who travelled some distance to come from their homes outside the greater Hobart.

The music for cortinas between early tandas was “American Pie”, which has a reference to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and others. The music died. This year, on 24 June, it had been 85 years since Carlos Gardel was killed in an airplane accident in Colombia during his Caribbean tour in 1935. It was felt that tango had died. But, soon, tango came to life again. Re-born tango, especially D’Arienzo’s rhythmic ones, brought people back on dance floors. Tango is still with us. It is a joy to mention we had two babies present at our milonga last night. Very early education! Trust tango will be still alive when they have grown up.

It was good to see dancers of last night weren’t milonga-shy despite there were quire unusual milonga tandas except Carlos Di Sarli one. That Di Sarli tanda included “Zorzal”. Its verse tells about Gardel, the thrush (el zorzal).

Music played last night included some songs composed by Gardel and ones by Julio De Caro.

We listened to:

“Mano a mano”, “Soledad”, “Sus ojos se cerraron”, “Volver” and “Me da pena confesarlo” (by Gardel)

“Tierra quiera” and “El arranque” (by De Caro)

We listened to “La cumparsita” played by De Caro’s orchestra as we packed up.

See you all at future milongas.

First Friday Milonga 04/12/20

The 11th December, the second Friday of this December, marks the 130th birthday of Carlos Gardel and the 121st of Julio De Caro. It is the International Day of Tango because of their birthday.

One week ahead of it, our First Friday Milonga will celebrate their birthday with a selection of music, many of which will be somehow related to Gardel and De Caro. Thanks to the two tango great for their creation and innovation that contributed to the development of tango music, to which we love dancing.
