It is the first day of November today. It is the birthday of Homero Manzi, who was born on this day in 1907.
Manzi was a poet, playwright, film director, teacher, journalist, political activist, who has done a lot of work during his life which was cut short by cancer. This year marked the 70th year since his death at 43 years of age on the 3rd of May, 1951.
For us, his legacy is his poems left in a large number of tango music, including milongas and valses. There are so many outstanding pieces, needless to mention the ability of collaborating composers such as Aníbal Troilo, at least a couple of pieces with Manzi’s verse will be heard in a milonga. Our First Friday Milonga this November will be Homero Manzi Special featuring many pieces of his work – quite deliberately. Come along to appreciate Manzi’s work.
